Politics without society: explaining the rise of the Scottish National Party

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has emerged as one of the most successful national-regional parties in Europe. Yet SNP was a fringe group for its history, with limited organization and electoral viability. What explains ascent? Drawing on archival research interviews former party officials, this article argues that key developments positioned current success took place 1970s, decades before climb. It during time established organizational structure, social democratic ideology, centre-left policy orientation, but without establishing links to collateral organizations society had been crucial winning elections. it was, paradoxically, absence such linkages served accelerate party’s rise 2000s, secularization deindustrialization weakened socio-economic foundations Conservative Party, close ties Church Scotland, and, more significantly, Labour which saw trade union base deteriorate. Under these conditions, uniquely capture unaligned voters, recruit leaders, take advantage new constitutional environment created by establishment Parliament 1999.
